Business Fraternities Face Off in Smith-KPMG Case Competition

Nearly 100 business fraternity pledges competed in Smith’s semesterly Interfraternal Case Competition, hosted by the Center for Social Value Creation and KPMG. Teams proposed AI-driven sustainability solutions for a fictional medical center. Delta Sigma Pi’s team took first place.

Nearly 100 pledges from four business fraternities at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business competed in the Center for Social Value Creation’s third semesterly Interfraternal Case Competition this April.

Hosted in partnership with KPMG, the event challenged teams to analyze the strategic position of a fictional medical center and deliver actionable recommendations for implementing artificial intelligence into diagnostic imaging and predictive analysis. Participants were tasked with balancing these innovations against ethical, financial, and operational constraints—all while aligning with broader sustainability goals.

The competition brought together pledges from Alpha Kappa Psi, Phi Chi Theta, Pi Sigma Epsilon, and Delta Sigma Pi. More than 200 attendees gathered to watch the presentations and final pitches.

The first-place team—from Delta Sigma Pi—included Jennifer Lombardo, Leeann Shaw, and Shreya Sanikommu, who impressed judges with their strategic insights and well-rounded proposal.

A panel of 11 Smith School alumni served as judges: Corbin Neiberline, Gerson Elias, Brandon Carrera, Wendy Feldman, Rachel DiDonna, Reyner Fouch, Jennifer Soloway, Tyler Boyles, Amber Tucci, Jake Downing, and Jessica Maex.

The Interfraternal Case Competition is hosted each semester by the Center for Social Value Creation to give new business students a platform to engage in experiential learning, build leadership skills, and explore the role of business in addressing complex societal challenges.
